IMO Maths Olympiad: Class-Wise Strategy for Classes 1 to 10

IMO is the most attempted SOF olympiad, and the one where preparation shows the clearest return. Here is what to focus on at each stage.

Classes 1–4: speed with small numbers

At this level the maths is easy but the reading is not. Patterns, odd-one-out, mirror images, measurement and simple money problems dominate. Practice reading a question once and answering — re-reading is what causes children to run out of time.

Classes 5–7: reasoning becomes the differentiator

Coding-decoding, series, direction sense and blood relations appear alongside fractions, ratios, geometry and data handling. Students who treat logical reasoning as 'not real maths' consistently lose 8–10 marks here.

Classes 8–10: the Achievers Section decides ranks

Most serious candidates clear the first three sections. Ranks are separated by the 5 Achievers questions worth 3 marks each — typically multi-concept problems on algebra, mensuration, trigonometry or probability. Solve at least 5 such questions every week.
