SOF Olympiad Preparation: A Practical Guide for Parents (Classes 1–10)
Most parents discover the SOF Olympiads through a school circular a few weeks before the exam. The good news: Level 1 rewards steady, structured practice far more than expensive coaching.
Understand what Level 1 actually tests
SOF Level 1 papers are built on the class syllabus your child already studies at school, plus a reasoning section and a higher-difficulty Achievers Section. Nothing in the paper is outside a well-taught school curriculum — the difficulty comes from question framing, speed, and multi-step reasoning.
- Classes 1–4: 35 questions in 60 minutes
- Classes 5–10: 50 questions in 60 minutes
- No negative marking in Level 1 — never leave a blank
- Achievers Section carries 2–3 marks per question and usually decides ranks
A realistic 8-week plan
Week 1–2: revise the school chapters covered so far and read the chapter-wise theory in the preparatory material. Week 3–5: one section-wise practice set every alternate day. Week 6–7: two full-length timed mock tests per week. Week 8: revision of mistakes only — no new material.
What parents should and should not do
Do sit with your child for the review of a mock test, not the test itself. Do keep a single 'mistake notebook'. Do not buy five different books — one syllabus source plus repeated timed practice beats variety.
